Everyone must have heard the expression ?the American dream? and maybe all of us have dreamed of that Promised Land called America (or more exactly the USA). But what is the origin of this concept? Well, the term was first used by James Truslow Adams is his book The Epic of America, written in 1911. He wrote that is was that dream of a land in which life should be better and richer and fuller for everyone, with opportunity for each according to ability or achievement. It is a difficult dream for the European upper classes to interpret adequately, considers the author. In his book he clearly states that it is not a dream of motor cars and high wages merely, but a dream of social order in which each man and each woman shall be able to attain to the fullest stature of which they are innately capable, and be recognized by others for what they are, regardless of the fortuitous circumstances of birth or position.
There were however people that considered the American dream only a continuous search for wealth and success, or, at the other extreme, persons who said that for a man working two jobs is an ongoing battle for survival. Discussions with numerous immigrants to the USA reveal that you need your share of luck there also, but it is different from your country of origin, the way of thinking is different and if you have a job you get paid and you can live well with what you earn. ...
