Yellowstone is getting restless. Seismologists say that earth tremors there are increasing in frequency, although they are mostly minor so far.
Yellowstone - the national park and its surrounding area - is one of the wonders of the American West. Tourists visit in droves each year for the magnificent natural beauty and the wildlife, and, of course, to watch the geysers spout steaming hot water high into the air.
The beauty of this region hides a terrible secret, one that was only discovered about 40 years ago. It is the Yellowstone Caldera, a superheated depression containing magma and volcanic gases. This "supervolcano," if it were to blow, would cause worldwide devastation on a scale never seen in human history.
Some soothsayers warn that the Yellowstone Supervolcano could qualify as the mega-disaster predicted to occur in the year 2012.
The caldera has exploded before. It "blows" approximately every 700,000 years. The last time it exploded was 700,000 years ago! It's time is due.
An explosion of the Yellowstone Caldera would destroy the western states of the U.S. at the very least. It would probably destroy the whole country, and Canada as well, by the massive earthquakes that would accompany it and by the ash it would dump on the land. The entire would would be severely affected because of the ash that would be poured into the sky, leading possibly to a new ice age.
As the countdown to 2012 continues, keep your eye on Yellowstone. The end time signs may be clearer there than anywhere else on earth.
