Dubai, one of the seven emirates that make up the United Arab Emirates, is unquestionably the commercial, leisure and sporting capital of the Gulf.
International businesses are attracted by the liberal attitude and minimal bureaucracy, visitors enjoy the relaxed, luxurious lifestyle and followers of sport appreciate the world-class events held here. The creek is both the visual and commercial heart of the city. Dubai's modern development began around the turn of the century with the establishment by local merchants of an entrepôt trade based on this safe, natural anchorage. Now the emirate has a population made up of more than 70 nationalities, bringing a richly cosmopolitan character to the city.

Arabic is the national language, but English is often used in business. Hindi, Urdu and Farsi are also widely spoken. Dubai is a Muslim society and visitors should respect the laws and social conventions of the faith. While the consumption of alcohol is permitted in hotels and private houses, drunkenness is not tolerated. Drinking and driving elicits severe penalties.

During the Holy Month of Ramadan, it is not permitted to eat, drink, or smoke in public during daylight hours. Many hotel restaurants, however, do remain open during the day for the benefit of Non-Muslims

Sports - The combination of sun, sand and sea makes for superb activity holidays. On land, spectators can enjoy world class events - the Dubai Desert Classic Golf Tournament, Dubai Rugby Seven?s, Dubai ATP Tennis Tournament, Dubai International Rally, Dubai International Powerboat Race, and, of course, the Dubai World Cup, the world's richest horse race, as well as witnessing the excitement of the local sport of camel racing.

For those who prefer to participate, the opportunities are virtually limitless - from sand skiing to shooting, go-carting to croquet, ice skating to archery, bowling to badminton. Golfing enthusiasts will be delighted to find four superb championship courses, each with its own unique range of hazards, designed to test the skills of even the most experienced players.
