Shanghai, China's largest city is preparing for 2010 World Expo. There are the same big
preparations like the ones happening now in Beijing for Summer Olympics 2008, even at a larger
scale. And that's because the Olympics event lasts only a fortnight,while expo will extend
over more than six months, with an astounding 70 million visitors, as all predictions talk
about.
In concordance with the event slogan "Better City, Better Life", Shanghai officials lunched an
ambitious program of infrastructural upgrades. Between its goals, the aim to double the
capacity of transit system, by construction of new four subterranean train lines, a magnetic
levitation vehicle connecting Shanghai to the near city of Hangzhou. But there are still
questions about lots of architectural structures, designs, and financial issues. As in most
cases, political problems lead to delays. Like the announcement that the design for the heart
of expo - the Expo Center - will be realized by East China Architecture Design Institute,
winning out over Perkins Eastman. Rumors were heard that the over 10,000 square-foot main
building will be split in two structures. There are suggestions that new design will be
elaborate in cooperation with Chinese architects.
