Over the years, the mobile phone market has become highly competitive. With new models being released practically every day, each crammed full with a range of cutting edge technology.

From time to time though, it's easy to question the practicality of some of the features boasted on the latest models.

Amidst this flurry of technology though is something quite special, that is getting consumers and executives equally excited, this is mobile music downloads.

Research suggests that the mobile phone will become the favoured platform for which to purchase and download music in the future.

"Looking to emerging markets, mobile could become the number one platform for music, where packaged CDs haven't gained traction due to piracy and lack of hardware ownership."

This prediction could be backed by current market figures, as mobile phone music downloads are currently making up 13% of the worlds music retail value.

With Understanding and Solutions predicting that by 2011 this figure will rise to almost 30%, which could be worth in the region of ?5.4bn

There are a few enticing mobile music download services currently available to consumers, for example, one rewards users with free downloads if they send previews of their current music collections to their friends.

Another emerging service, dubbed "Cliq" will allow users to instantly purchase and download particular tracks they hear through their mobile phones radio.
