Tiziano Vecelli or Vecellio (c. 1488-90 ? August 27, 1576), better known as Titian (tish'un), was the leader of the 16th-century Venetian school of the Italian Renaissance. He was born at Pieve di Cadore near Belluno (Veneto) in Italy, and died at Venice. But he lived on for half a century, changing his manner so drastically that some critics still refuse to believe that his early and later pieces could have been produced by the same man. What unites two parts of his career is his deep interest in colour.
Although his later works may not sing with vivid, luminous tints as his early pieces do, yet their loose brushwork and subtlety of polychromatic modulations have no precedents in the history of Western art.
A fresco of Hercules on the Morosini Palace is said to have been one of his earliest works; others were the Virgin and Child, in the Vienna Belvedere, and the Visitation of Mary and Elizabeth (from the convent of S. Andrea), now in the Venetian Academy.
Titian entered into partnership with Giorgione, and it is difficult to distinguish their early works. The earliest known work of Titian, the little Ecce Homo of the Scuola di San Rocco, was long regarded as the work of Giorgione. The ......
